Rockin' a little harder now

Justin is a surf ninja, so we were secretly hoping to find surfable waves on Cyprus. The idea isn't far fetched, as Malta, Israel, Sicily, and Crete all have well established surfing scenes and heaps of potential abounds throughout the Mediterranean. We had low expectations for the North Coast of Cyprus, as there isn't much fetch between it and Turkey, but we were pleasantly surprised. The first place we saw on the coast had a surfable wave. We drove the coastline to the westernmost point, and discovered lots of potential fun waves. Sure, we have low standards after surfing the Great Lakes, but these waves were actually decent. (Excellent by Great Lakes standards.)

The only small problem we had was a lack of surfboard. A fairly big impediment to surfing. We thought we'd be able to find a windsurfer and just use that, but every shop was closed for the season. (December is the most off season of the off season months.)

So after exploring the northwesternmost point of Cyprus, climbing the old lighthouse, and watching Boodah enjoy the tidepools, we made our way back to Kyrenia.

We explored the old harbor and walked the perimiter of the Castle/Fortress (we decided they wanted too many yurtles for us to explore the inside). Before retiring to the Ship Inn, we splurged on some bargain 2 yurtle Turkish coffee. Sounds like good value, relatively, until you realize that the cups are slightly larger than a thimble. Still, that didn't stop us from sipping it for a solid hour while Boodah slept and we waited out a torrential rainstorm. We were in cool venue, what appeared to be a large ancient church converted to a couple of shops and coffeeshops. There was a cross section of an ancient ship that made the perfect place for Boodah to nap.

That evening, Elle shared her gourmet chef skills and whipped up an incredible meal, while we all lamented the high costs of coffee and tried to stay awake until 8PM. (No dice.) But we were introduced to one of the phrases that would become a mainstay of the trip. "Rockin' a little harder now." (Thanks to Aqua Teen Hunger Force on Justin and Elle's iPod).
