La Paz

During the whole trip, one of Racecardriver's favorite place to play was behind Starship's wheel. I guess he takes after Boppa!

After two glorious beach-dwelling sunshine laden days, we made our way back to La Paz. There, we ate tasty fish tacos, vaguely considered getting some Lucha Libre under our belts, and walked along the malecon. All in all, La Paz is a nice town. The statues sure are buxom. (You want me to believe that mermaid's got naturals?) And the Oasis hotel was a nice step up from our previous nights of leaky therma-rest camping. The Oasis had pet peacocks! Too bad they were too fast to get a picture of.

And then, we were off, back to Alaska. Thanks Greg and Sonja and Liza-Loo and Ivan for sharing your Baja camping adventure with us!

In Anchorage we visited Team Wilyo once again, which was a treat as always. Thanks for the excellent hospitality and tasty grits! You're never too young (or old) to rock. Or rock a little harder! Austin Musashi demonstrates:

And tomorrow we're on the road again, to hang out with Team Wilyo and Mr. Jamgochian and his HNH lover. Sunny beach to frozen interior Alaska, one extreme to the other. Ice carving contests, northern lights, hot springs, and bowling await us in the big city. That, and a couple more ass-numbing plane rides each way.

La Ribera and Los Frailes

After Conejo, we decided to get down to the tropics, so we headed south to Los Frailes. Los Frailes is the last (mostly) undeveloped piece of the tip of the Baja peninsula, but it doesn't appear that it will remain that way for long. There is no question that somebody has clearly staked a claim and has big plans, on account of the plethora of private property billboards dotting the landscape. The best part about them is the warning that if you trespass, the INS and the IRS will be notified. Huh? Why would the US tax agency give a hoot about somebody trespassing in Mexico? Why would any US government branch? I guess the war on terror really has changed everything!

But after driving in the dark for a while, we decided to try to find a hotel en-route. As we were beginning to lose hope in the town of La Ribera, we noticed lots of people outside, including Consuela. Consuela said "Mira la luna!" It was the eclipse, and totally news to us. And she invited us to pitch our tents in her yard, saying mi casa su casa. Thank you, Consuela! We're wishing you positive vibes with your estomago surgery!

Bright and shiny the next morning we were on our way to Los Frailes. Los Frailes, for now, is very mellow and undeveloped. We bought Cabrillo from a local fisherman, and once again Greg whipped up a super tasty dinner. Paxson Revel wanted the big red snapper. Who can blame him? But it was 65 pounds and we didn't think we'd be able to eat it all.

Punta Conejo

After a few weather related delays, and visits with Team Wilyo in Anchorage and Team International Bowling in San Diego, we finally arrived in La Paz. Two days had been shaved off our total Mexico time, but we managed to make the best of it anyway. Team Shadow and their trusty Starship were waiting at the airport to whisk us off into the desert. They've been Starshipping their way from Idaho Falls all the way to the Tropics!

No wait, that isn't the Starship. But Starship is a VW and it does have surfboards on top. Here's a more accurate rendition.Bienvenidos!

After flying so far south, we headed north to the remote beach of Punta Conejo. That's Rabbit Point in English in case you were curious. But first we had to dodge the fierce Baja cows guarding the treacherous dirt road. They were no match for Starship. During the drive, Paxson wasted no time putting the moves on his special lady friend. He's very clever, feigning sleep. That's an advanced move! Revel-Roo and Liza-Loo go way back, all the way to their first week of life.

Sunny beach, here we come!

We ultimately didn't see any conejos or rabbits, but we did see (and eat) some of the tastiest ostiones (that's oysters) you ever laid your eyes (or tastebuds) on. We'd tell you they were the tastiest oysters we've ever eaten. But we'd also have to tell you they were the only oysters we've ever eaten. But the point of the matter is, they were flat out super tasty. Greg put together an oyster feast with a campstove, a cast iron skillet, some garlic, butter, tomatoes, and cajun spices. Mmmmmm. Hooray for Carlos and Alma, the local residents who dive daily for the tasty vittles and sell them for a bargain to gringos like us!

Of course, Greg and Boppa chased after the tasty waves. But for me the best part was watching Greg don J.Hill's old wetsuit.

Hockey Hair

As Boodah-Dude was wearing his hockey onesie, we couldn't help but be struck by the flowing beauty of his matching hockey hair. It reminds me of our Utah days back in '99, being entertained by the Vandals. You'd be hard pressed to find better lyrics. And I wouldn't be shocked to see Boppa's high school photos in the video. Will Pax Rev be able to make it back from Baja with his shfilby* intact?

Time will tell.

All Snowed In

Here's what we woke up to this morning:

After shoveling our way out of the door, here's a glimpse at the sidewalk snowdrift.

We're just lucky we recently received an emergency island survival kit in the mail!

In case you need a close up of the business card.... (You probably don't want to know the details about how it was obtained. I know I sure don't.)

And best of all....guess who's still here????
